Fifth day – 7/11/20

START: Newfound Gap  GSNP   2:20am
FINISH: Davenport Gap  GSNP  5:30pm
30.8 miles*    15:10    2.0 mph
Total miles: 237.6 miles   47.5 mpd

*does not include the 7 extra miles ‘second guessing’ ( and 2-3 hours lost) while walking back and fourth due to lack of blazing. This unfortunate occurence, along with Mercury’s slower pace due to shin splints, has put the overall AT supported record (41.5 days) held by Karel Sabbe supported by Joren) out of reach.
Mercury continues to walk on continuing to be ‘in the game’ for the woman’s supported AT endurance record.
Eastern Smokies were beautiful – first day out of six that Mercury was not rained on or to experience the ‘thrill’ of a daily thunderstorm. Also, the first day she hasn’t seen a bear.
She walked the ‘roadless’ 30.8 mile section without support.
Out of the Smokies and onward with slowly healing shin splints!
